Beer News Special Report

Wednesday Morning DUMP?

No, of course that doesn’t sound right.  And after 118 editions of the Monday Morning DUMP, it shouldn’t sound right.

But that is what we are going to do here.  An expanded edition of the link DUMP section in disguise as the Beer News Special Report.

Let’s get to it.

Village Voice & 10 Beers For Spring

It is here.  Spring.  The equinox has passed.  Daylight savings time is behind us.  April is ready to be front and center on your calendars.  Big effin’ deal if snow is in the forecast yet again (4″ for parts of NY by this morning), it is the season for rebirth.

The local publication that covers everything you should be doing, the Village Voice, recommends two handfuls of brews to get us out of the winter doldrums.  And they are not all seasonals.  Which appealed to me, if you know my hatred of the spring seasonal you will know why.

Here we areMagic Hat Pistil (IPL, 4.5% ABV), Founders All Day IPA (IPA, 4.7% ABV), Blue Point Mosaic (Session IPA, 4.8% ABV), Otter Creek Copper (Ale, 5% ABV), Saranac Prism (American Pale Wheat, 5.2% ABV), Southern Tier Eurotrash Pils (Pilsner, 5.2% ABV), Sam Adams Cold Snap (Witbier, 5.3% ABV), Peak Organic Simcoe (American Pale, 5.4% ABV), Ithaca Company Ground Break (Saison, 6.2% ABV), The Bruery Saison De Lente (Saison, 6.5% ABV)

My Personal #1 on This List

What is the common thread on this list?  Aside from it being very north east centric, (all beers are either New York or New England breweries) 8 of the 10 are below 5.5% ABV, and all are below 6.5%.  Light.  That is the theme.  Light, but flavorful.  The summer is more about light and refreshing.  The Village Voice is placing an emphasis on light, but also including taste.

Of the list, we have had the Founders, the Otter Creek, the Blue Point, the Southern Tier, and the Sam Adams.  Out of these 5, I can not recommend the Otter Creek Copper enough.  It blew me away at how fantastic it really is.  It is not just a good, everyday drinker, it is a great beer period.  Do it.

Savor the Beer, Savor the Experience

There’s a lot of white people in this pic

Craft Beer festivals are becoming a dime a dozen these days.  Most are a pretty generic mash up of all the hottest breweries hiring 1-800-Bartenders to stand behind kegs and dole out 2oz samples to the clamoring masses.  They are fun, but to really get something out of them, a personal touch, an upper class touch might be what it is missing.

That is the Savor Craft Beer Experience.  Tickets are on sale now.  May 9th & 10th down in DC.  Consider it the upper echelon of craft beer tasting festivals.  Get in on it.

Beer Nerds meet Nerd Beer

I am not sure where the trend made the heel turn, but back in my school days, being a nerd was not something to be proud of.  If someone ever called me a fan boy, they would meet the business end of my fist right quick.  And if someone ever called themselves that right in front of me, the same result may just occur.

But today it is different.  People can not wait to call themselves a nerd, and they oddly enough do it proudly.  I can’t put it into words better than the fine folks at Portlandia, who put together this nerd PSA, explaining this very thing.

Well, it may be a sad true fact, but “Nerds” dominate the zeitgeist these days.  Which is why we have phenomenons such as Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead.

Well nerds, welcome to the world of craft beer.  Breweries everywhere are continually popping up with these nerd inspired brews; The Walking Dead Beer that includes actual smoked goat brains, Star Trek Klingon Beer invites drinkers to drink like warriors, and the Game of Thrones beer that no beer distributor can seem to keep on the shelves.

It is only a matter of time before there is a Legend of Zelda pale ale…

Whether it is ironic or not, I am not sure.  What I am sure of however, it is annoying.  What can you do.

That is all.
